Rachi (埒) was originally the fence built around a riding ground. From this came the sense of a division or scope, and by around the late medieval period usages such as rachi ga aku (a matter gets settled) appear to have begun. The Jitsū dictionary says rachi ga aku came from the kurabeuma horse-race ritual at Kamigamo Shrine.
