Kō (劫) is a transliteration of the Sanskrit kalpa, a unit of extremely long time. 億劫 is a hundred million times that. It was originally read okkō or okukō and was a Buddhist term for an unimaginably long period. Since something that takes a long time to accomplish cannot be done easily, the meaning shifted to "not easily done" and then to "bothersome, not inclined to do," and the reading also changed to okkū.
