In Buddhist cosmology, the earth is said to rest on three layers: the wind wheel, the water wheel and the metal wheel (konrin). The boundary between the metal wheel and the water wheel is konrinzai, the very bottom of the earth. From this came the senses "thoroughly" and "to the very end." In the Edo period it was also used without a negative, but today it almost always appears in the form konrinzai ... shinai (will never ...).
