Example

決まる前に取引先へ話してしまったのは勇み足だった。

Telling the client before the deal was final was jumping the gun.

Origin

In sumo, losing by stepping out of the ring first through excess momentum while driving the opponent to the edge. It is one of the losses caused by a wrestler's own action, distinguished from the kimarite (winning techniques). The picture of beating oneself through sheer momentum with victory in sight became the figure of speech as is.
