Origin

A hanjō (half mat) was a small one-person mat that spectators in the pit (doma) of Edo-period playhouses sat on. When they did not like an actor's performance, they threw it onto the stage to show their displeasure. From this it came to mean criticizing or making fun of what others say or do. Also hanjō wo uchikomu or hanjō wo iu.
