blowing one's own horn

Praising oneself; bragging.

Example

手前味噌になるが、今回の資料はよくできたと思う。

I don't mean to blow my own horn, but I think the handouts came out well this time.

Origin

Miso was once made in each household, so the flavor differed from home to home, and everyone tended to think their own family's miso was the best. The phrase comes from boasting about that homemade miso. An example appears in the comic book (kokkeibon) Ōyama Dōchū Hizakurige of 1832.
